#55: Comparative murder statistics in Jamaica and Haiti (fwd)

Caribbean News Agency (CANA)

Thirty one murdered in Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CANA - There were 31 murders in Jamaica between
Monday and Saturday, the Police Information Centre (PIC) reported.
Police said Saturday that of the number of persons killed, mostly in
Kingston and St. Catherine, the police were linked to five of the
killings. A total of 440 people have been murdered so far this year
compared with 453 for the corresponding period last year.
___________________________________________________________________

So, extrapolating a bit, the murder rate is rougly 880-906 for a country
with

a population of 2.7 million, or about 32.6-33.6 per 100,000 per year.

In Haiti, I estimate the murder rate to be about 10-12 deaths per week

or about 520-624 per year for a population of 8 million, or about
6.50-7.80

per 100,000.

This would seem to indicate that things are better in Haiti, 4 times better
to

be precise!

Of course, the great majority of Haitians do not at all care about the fact

they seem to be better off than Jamaicans on this particular score.

They naturally compare what is today to what existed before.

Are they better off on this basis?
