Miami man charged with trying to get passport for deportee

November 29, 2001, 7:41 PM EST

MIAMI -- A Miami man was charged Thursday with trying to get a passport for
a deported Haitian friend after an attentive passport worker noticed
irregularities in his application.

A clerk who accepted a passport application from Gary Fontus at North Miami
City Hall noticed Oct. 24 that his new picture did not match him, the
picture on an expired passport or his driver's license.

Fontus, 22, of Miami, went to the main Miami passport agency to check on the
application Wednesday and was arrested.

During questioning, he told investigators that he was trying to get the
passport for a Haitian citizen who had been deported for trying to enter the
United States with marijuana. The passport would have been in Fontus' name
with his friend's picture.

Fontus made his initial court appearance Thursday. Bond was set at $100,000
on a charge of lying on a passport application and he was ordered to return
to enter a plea Dec. 13.
