OAS seeks to end crisis in Haiti
BY NANCY SAN MARTIN
nsanmartin@herald.com

"According to diplomatic sources, the Organization of American States is
studying the possibility of invoking a provision that would require Haiti to
allow international mediators to negotiate a truce between the government
and its critics...

The objective, according to sources familiar with the talks: strengthening
democratic institutions in Haiti..."

If "negotiating a truce" means imposing a solution not supported by the
majority of Haiti's electorate the OAS is clearly out of touch with reality.
The Convergence, despite all of its posturing with backing from the
International Republican Institute and the Bush administration, still does
not have a constituency of any stature in Haiti. Any "truce" which fails to
recognize this basic fact is doomed to cause only more suffering and
violence.

Given the Convergence's lack of popularity, they have already been given the
best they can expect with the concessions already made by the constitutional
government. Wake up folks, Haiti's poor majority will never accept giving
the Convergence anything it has not earned at the ballot box. The
government's concessions already threaten to cross that line.

It never ceases to amaze me how the OAS plays into its detractors hands by
proving their assertions that it is merely a handmaiden of US foreign
policy.
