a978: Carnival in Haiti: Lots of questions (Antoine asks) (fwd)

From: GUY S ANTOINE <GuyAntoine@windowsonhaiti.com>

Were you present? If so, where, and what were your impressions?

Is the carnival in Jacmel the only one in Haiti worth its fame? How does it
measure to festivities of prior years? Do you think it's on an even keel, is it
getting better or is it on a decline? What about other major cities like
Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haitien, Jérémie, ...? Jacmel's festive reputation
dwarfs all others. Is this an accurate picture of the reality through all of Haiti?

Which band had the best music? Which band had the best lyrics? The most
socially relevant? The most politically targeted? Best and worst messages?

State and carnival. Economy and carnival. Catholic church and carnival.
Protestants and carnival. Vodun and carnival. Elites and carnival. Poor
people and carnival. Foreign visitors and carnival. Diaspora and carnival.
Tourism and carnival. Generational differences and carnival. Law and Order
and carnival. Creativity and carnival. Catharsis, rebirth, illusion, hope, beauty,
resource allocation, cultural identity... and carnival. What are the relationships?

A thousand possible answers. How do you see it?
