Jean Bertrand Aristide renews his commitment to bring the political crisis to
an end

Port-au-Prince, March 19, 2002 -(AHP)- The President of the  Republic, Jean
Bertrand Aristide renewed on Monday his commitment to bring the political
crisis to an end.

In a message to the people of Fort-Liberté on the occasion of an official
visit to this city, the President offered once again a "fraternal accolade to
his brothers in the opposition."

According to a press release from the Office of Communication and Press of
the Chief Executive, Mr. Aristide affirmed that he is working every day under
the light of the law to settle the crisis with the opposition.

The Head of State also announced that he was hoping that the Alfa-Economics
campaign would be fully launched prior to the end of the crisis.  Thus he
encourages the people of Fort-Liberté to become involved in the solidarity
economy.

Mr. Aristide reminded the audience that had the responsibility to maintain
the peace and to work for the well-being of the poor and the underprivileged.

The Chief Executive invited the population to be vigilant, enlightened
through the knowledge acquired through literacy and to see to the proper
functioning of the projects to be carried out in the areas of infrastructure,
potable water, health care and education.

President Aristide announced that more than 936 million gourdes will be
invested in these sectors for the benefit of the inhabitants of the
Department of the North.

He established a link between the themes "Alpha-Economics" and elections and
expressed a desire to see the Haitian voters writing and voting without
assistance at the next elections.

"It is a challenge of historical proportions for the candidates to be
committed to literacy to teach the majority of the population to read and
write before 2004", declared Mr. Aristide.
