Opposition demands political change in Haiti

Story Filed: Saturday, March 23, 2002 12:30 AM EST

Port-au-Prince, Mar 22, 2002 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Leaders of Democratic
Convergence (CD), which includes almost all of the Haitian opposition,
demanded a change in the politics of the official Fanmi Lavalas (FL) party
during a demonstration Friday in the streets of the Haitian capital.
Hundreds of people, with CD leaders at their head, marched to demand "a
climate of peace to solve the crisis facing the country."
The demonstration, under police surveillance, ran its course without
incident.
Specific proposals announced by the opposition group include the
coordination of political activity, an increase in resources and supplies
for the National Police, independence for the judicial branch of the
government and completion of investigations into the murders of journalists
Jean Dominique and Brignol Lindor.
Convergence also proposed the adoption of an economic policy that will
alleviate the problems of the people, new "clean" elections and a new round
of negotiations with international aid agencies.
