a1426: Re: a1420: EFE: Opposition demands political change in Haiti : Poincy comments (fwd)

From: "[iso-8859-1] Jean Poincy" <caineve@yahoo.fr>

The opposition is running out of steam and does not
know what string to pull. I think the fear of becoming
totally obsolete is what drives them lately. Their
latest demands as prerequisites for talk resumption
are quite different from previous ones when they felt
they had something in their hands. They are making a
big mistake if they think those can be used as an
ultimatum that would make Aristide budge.

This kind of demands can be best satisfied when those
that voice them out are part of the government or have
great influence on how political affairs are
conducted. The Convergence is nowhere on this
spectrum. How do they expect to get results when they
refuse to participate in the government in the first
place? I just can't understand how they think.

I doubt the new government gave them much choice,
considering that the invitation came after the
government is complete. Promising that some ministers
are willing to give up their seats, as an invitation
is not a genuine one. Hence, why keeping most of the
ministers from the previous government? Why didn't the
Prime Minister make such an offer, insist on it
loudly, and wait for a while before completing his
cabinet? Prime Minister Yvon Neptune would have made a
shrewd political move if he ignored the Convergence's
declination to take part in his government and reached
out before forming his government. Due to the nature
of the political crisis, there was no rush for a new
government.

At any rate, the Convergence needs to play smart by
ceasing their negative politics, jumping in the train
and making things happen for the people. That way they
would have a greater chance to enlarge their popular
political base, which they badly need. Rather than
protesting to make political changes the way they
understand them, they should march to request a strong
presence in the new government to be in a better
position to bring forth their claims and make them
heard.
