12150: how to start an English-language library for a Haitian village? (fwd)

From: Stuart M Leiderman <leidermn@cisunix.unh.edu>

"...the young adults I am working with...all well along with their
education and all speak English, have asked me to help them begin a
library. Thought if I could take a dozen books with me in July and
add to it each time I go down we could, eventually, put together a good
selection for them. What would your list for the first dozen books
include and where can we find them?..."

dear Group:

I received this request for book suggestions for a starter English-
language library in a Haitian village. I think my preferences
would begin with Carl Sandburg's "Rootabaga Stories" and his Lincoln
biography, and run through some autobiographies (e.g. Benjamin Franklin,
Clara Barton, P.T. Barnum), to Benjamin Spock's baby book, Barry
Commoner's "Closing Circle", Jean Giono's "The Man Who Planted Trees" and
even the James Bond series and back issues of Mother Earth News. what
dozen books would you suggest? thanks.
