12305: Pina responds re: Alliance Letter and Judge Gassant (fwd)

From: kevin pina <kpinbox@hotmail.com>

In Le Nouvelliste dated June 11, 2002, page number four, Guyler C. Delva of
the Haitian Journalist's Association states that his organization is
disposed to request the judicial authorities to nominate a new judge given
lack of a response from Judge Claudy Gassant. Pierre Antoine Lovinsky of the
Fondation 30 September also publicly calls for consideration of the
appointment of a new investigating judge in lieu of a lack of response by
Judge Gassant.

The article also makes clear that, according to Jacques Maurice of the
Presidential Communications Office, Judge Gassant was formally transmitted
his reappointment on at least two occasions, April 9th, following approval
of budget and securtiy arrangements, and a second notification was
transmitted on May 30 by Me. Joceline Pierre of the Ministry of Justice.

According to sources within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the first
notification was hand delivered to Judge Gassant on April 4th via diplomatic
courier.

So yes, Judge Gassant has been formally notified of his reappointment with
numerous requests for a meeting to discuss his new mandate, budget and
security arrangements. He has thus far failed to respond leading many to
beleive that he never had any intention of returning to Haiti to continue
the investigation into the assasination of Jean Dominique.

This makes the Alliance letter yet another instance of the misinformed
leading the misinformed. It is a shame to waste all those wonderful
Hollywood names, many who I know to be sincere in their desires for justice
in Haiti, on a mistaken premise.
