12529: Unions and human rights organisations denounce the detention of Guacimal 9 (fwd)

From: Tttnhm@aol.com

10 July - Unions and human rights organisations have denounced the prolonged
detention of nine people detained at the Guacimal union rally on 27 May. At a
press conference, representatives of the National Coalition for Haitian
Rights, the Platform of Haitian Human Rights Organisations, the Platform to
Advocate for Alternative Development, and Batay Ouvriye, declared that the
continued detentions constitute a serious violation of the Haitain
Constitution, and of conventions signed by the Haitian state.

These organisations are demanding the release of the prisoners, who have not
even been charged with any crime, and who are being denied medical attention
even though their condition is deteriorating each day. Batay Ouvriye called
on its members to continue the fight to get the illegally detained people
released, and vowed to launch a series of strikes and demonstrations if they
are not free by 17 July. (HPN and AHP)
