Haitians Are Suffering
August 3, 2002

To the Editor:

"8 Years After Invasion, Haiti Squalor Worsens" (front
page, July 30) presents only the tip of the iceberg. While
$500 million in aid is being withheld, eight million
Haitians are suffering.

At the United Nations, I had to argue before the Economic
and Social Council to have a resolution on long-term
support for Haiti maintained on the agenda.

It is one thing to fight the government of Haiti, but it is
another thing to punish the Haitian people. Perhaps your
article will help the international community understand
the situation of this impoverished nation.
