Programme of Activities for Creole Language Month in Montreal

OCTOBER 1-30, 2002

PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS: Kalalou Teyat, La Perle Retrouvée, SORHICA,
AEEHQ, KIPKAA, Café Vienne, Galerie Espace D, Association socio-culturelle
Guyane-Québec, Radio Haïtienne de Montréal, Maison d'Haïti, Dept. de
Linguistique et de traduction de l'Université de Montréal, Restaurant le
Tropico, Asosyasyon Larelèv, Journal La Source, CIDIHCA, and others.

KIPKAA and its collaborators present to you this programme of Activities for
Creole Language Month in Montreal and hope that you will take a few moments
to look it over. We encourage you to bring with you lots of notebooks and
pencils to donate to the work of literacy in Haiti.

SATURDAY 5 Oct. - 2:30 PM to 10:00 PM (admission: $15)

The Official Start of Creole Language Month. Featured speaker: Professor
Albert Valdman, from Indiana University, International Vice-President Études
Créoles. His talk will focus upon the Haitian Creole language. Also included
in the programme will be activities such as: theatrical presentations by
Gladys Démosthène and Badiona Bazin, the choral group Arohqc, comedies,
poetry recitals, songs, Creole food, book exhibit, and a painting exhibit to
honor artist Emmanuel Pierre-Charles. This activity will be organized by
KIPKAA in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics and Translation of

Visit EXPO CREOLE! Paintings, sculptures and handcrafts of many Caribbean and

Conference with Denis Notari. Theme: «Causes and Effects of Social

Evening of Creole with SORHICA (Caribbean Historical and Cultural Research
Society): conference, debate, and book exhibit. Featured guests: Pierre

KALALOU TEYAT presents «HERE'S THE CANDIDATE», a political satire play,

The Guyana-Quebec Socio-cultural Association (ASCGQ) presents an exhibition
of paintings and photos. Other programme highlights: readings from the texts

SUNDAY 13 Oct. - 4:00 PM (free admission)

The Quebec Association of Haitian Professors (AEEHQ) has organized a
conference on pedagogy and the training seminars destined for teachers in
Haiti. Featured speaker: Professor Yvon Lamour, of SDKA (Haitian Creole
Development Center) and Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, USA. Location: 415

THURSDAY 17 Oct. - 6:00 PM (free admission)

Ghislaine Charlier, the renowned conference speaker, will talk on the subject
of Jean-Jacques Dessalines and what role he played in the Haitian Revolution.
Then, at 7:30 PM, Denis NOTARI will develop the theme: «Mother and Father or
Mommy and Daddy?» Location: Café Vienne, 1446 Saint Catherine Street West,

Café Vienne and KIPKAA invite you to a Beginners Workshop on Reading and
Writing Creole. This workshop will be led by Professor Gérard D. Montès, of

An Evening of Creole Proverbs with the Haitian Cultural Association «La Perle
Retrouvée» (the Rediscovered Pearl): Featured speaker: Emmanuel Vedrine, from
Boston, USA. He is a poet, author and Creole researcher who will walk us
through the origins, significance and moral teachings of Creole proverbs.

(International Center for Haitian, Caribbean and Afro-Canadian Documentation

Presence of the Creole Language in the Media, an activity of Montreal Haitian

An Evening with Frankétienne. He will be accompanied by Georges Rodriguez.
Theme of his presentation: «The Importance of Creole Theater in Haiti. A Look
at the Theater of Frankétienne». Professor Roody Barthelemy, from Florida,
will speak on the theme: «The New Language of Creole-speaking Immigrants in
the Diaspora». Other activities will include: theater presentatin by Germain
Gervais and Barbara Guillaume, book exhibit, poetry recital, songs, an
exhibition of the paintings of the group «pipirit chantan» in honor of
Emmanuel Pierre-Charles, Creole food, etc. Location: University of Montreal,
