Sorry. I must disagree. Speaking French may help to understand a word here
and there but does not help to understand a Creole sentence anymore than it
helps to understand  the "Choual" of a Quebecker. Even when the word is the
same, differences in accent and intonation intrude.
Americans generally learn good Creole faster than Frenchmen who tend to fall
into "Petit Nègre".
