Anyone doubting the just cause of Batay Ouvrye in the case of the Guacimal
workers needs to check their facts. The alliance between the Lavalas
representatives of the North, especially the representative of the
President in Cap-Haitien, and the Zephyr brothers who are the most
reactionary, right-wing, prejudiced plantation owners in the North, is too
shocking to be believed. Yet this unholy alliance has happened, and both
parties are conspiring to trample the rights of the workers , who earn
peanuts a day, have no benefits to speak of, and are constantly under the
threat of being beaten or worse for revendicating their rights. The
coverage of the arrests of the Guacimal workers and the two journalists was
very poor at best, and the government made sure to quash any attempt to
provide more widespread coverage. As for the illegal detention of the two
Guacimal workers, who are still in jail, it is beyond belief. Certainly, I
keep hoping that Lavalas does not stand for the eradication of unions,
workers' organisations, and peasant associations in Haiti, but the trend is
not encouraging: from the Kozepep movement of Charles Suffra to UNOH and
the other teacher's unions to the Guacimal workers, the little Haitian with
no representation is being further persecuted when he tries to assert his
rights andf fight the stinking bourgeroisie which has allied itself with
lavalas. Clearly, workers trying to organize are in trouble currently and
they are not being helped in their efforts by a government which was
expected to protect the little guy against the capitalist interests that
have controlled Haiti for so long.
