HAITI: ARISTIDE PROPOSES NEW ELECTIONS President Jean-Bertrand Aristide
rejected opposition calls for his resignation after two weeks of protests
and suggested new elections as a solution to the country's political
turmoil, which stems in part from a dispute over legislative elections held
in May 2000. "I will not leave office; coup d'état is not a solution to
Haiti's problems," Mr. Aristide told reporters at the National Palace. "The
best resolution to this crisis is to form an electoral council and hold new
elections." His comments came on a day that saw renewed demonstrations as
opposition and student groups rallied to protest the worsening economy and
what they say is Mr. Aristide's increasingly authoritarian rule.
