Dr Janvier Gasana of FIU's school of Public Health has been conducting
research on lead poisoning in Miami-Dade County. He has found that
approximately 235,000 children in Miami-Dade County are at-risk of lead
poisoning. In previous research, Gasana mapped the presence of lead in 121
homes of the county's older neighborhoods. He found that more than 55
percent of homes in Little Haiti had elevated levels of lead dust. Lead
poisnioning in this case was directly attributed to the lead contained in
the house paint.
