I did not mean to imply that either political party in the United States
would formulate the remedy for Haiti's many ills.  I agree with your
statement that "it would be a fallacy to believe that Haiti will be rescued
by the Democrats or the Republicans;"  but if one only argues from the point
of philosophy and ideology then the complex process of nation-building
becomes more complex.

My grandfather worked in Haiti as a Master Carpenter until he came to the
U.S. in the 60s; now, there are people in my family who would argue that
their educated opinions on what should be done in Haiti have more "weight"
than the opinion of a man whose education ended at 8th grade.  But I see the
situation a bit differently:  a person who knows how to build a house has
far more value in a country like Haiti than ten intellectuals who spout
"knowledge" and nothing else.
