LA TROUPE MAKANDAL PRESENTS KRIK! KRAK!, A DRUM AND DANCE WORKSHOP OPEN
HOUSE/REGISTRATION FOR CHILDREN AGES 6-12

La Troupe Makandal, an Afro-Haitian music and dance company, provides
intercultural experiences for people throughout the United States. Under
the direction of Dr. Lois Wilcken, Executive Director, and Frisner
Augustin, master drummer and 1999 National Endowment for the Arts
Heritage Fellow, the Brooklyn-based company has been celebrating the
dance and culture of Haiti for twenty years. Drawing largely from sacred
traditions, La Troupe Makandal's lively presentations unmask stereotypes
while entertaining audiences and keeping the magic alive.

On Friday April 25 from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM a special open
house/registration for La Troupe Makandal's spring session of classes
will be held at Camp Friendship, 339 Eighth Street (between Fifth and
Sixth Avenues) in Brooklyn. Camp Friendship is located in Park Slope and
can be reached via the F train to Seventh Avenue or the R train to Fourth
Avenue. Admission to the Open House/Registration is FREE. Children ages
6 through 12 and their parents are welcome to explore the mysteries of
vibration/tone and express themselves through Afro-Caribbean dance. An
adult must accompany all children. There will be a demonstration of
drumming techniques and a free sample dance class. Practice instruments
will be provided and light refreshments will be served.

The 10-week session of spring classes begins May 2003 and will be held at
three locations in Brooklyn: Dempsey Center (Park Slope), Beacon School
(Flatbush), and Haitian American Alliance (Flatbush). Admission is $5.00
per class. Discounts are available for students taking more classes and
families that register more than two children.

For information on registration or spring classes please call La Troupe

State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts
support Krik! Krak!, the children's dance and drum workshop. LP Music
Group has provided instruments.
