From: Initiative Haiti <initiative2004@yahoo.com>

In Celebration of Haitian Flag Day
and to commemorate the Bicentennial
of Toussaint Louverture's death

The 2004 Haiti Initiative (Inisyativ Ayiti 2004) and
The Association of Haitian and Francophone Studies at
York College are celebrating May 18th this year with a
conference and cultural extravaganza that will excite
both the minds and the dancing feet of Haitians in the
New York area.

This event will take place between 12 noon and 6 p.m.,
on Sunday May 18, in the Atrium of York College,
located on Guy Brewer Blvd. and Archer Ave. in
Jamaica, Queens (Archer Ave. bus terminal; E and J
trains to Parsons Blvd.).

During the first segment of this program, our keynote
speaker, historian Claude MOISE, will deliver a
challenging and critical assessment of Haiti's 200
years of independence. How do the glory and the
heights of Haiti's independence in 1804 account for
the misery and the abysmal failures of today? A panel
discussion will explore such issues as the true colors
of the Haitian flag; Toussaint Louverture's
contributions to Haiti's independence; and Haiti's
(Saint Domingue) contribution to U.S. sovereignty in
the Jeffersonian age.

The entertainment section will feature Haitian dance
music, free Haitian food, poetry reading, and an
impressive array of progressive musicians and
troubadours, including Lody AUGUSTE, Miryam AUGUSTIN,
Sarah DUPUY, Alix AMBROISE aka BOUYOU, and Georges
Wilson aka MOUMOUS with his group of students from
Wingate High School. Awilda STERLING and Albert BARTON
and their group, "LOS BOMBEROS DE BROOKLYN," an
afro-latin drum and dance ensemble, will also appear,
for the first time in the Haitian community, in a
special performance of "BOMBA," a contemporary social
dance enriched by 400 years of Afro-Caribbean culture
in Puerto-Rico."

Admission is free.
