15967: Janvier: Re: 15962: Wilcken: maternal mortality rate (fwd)

From: Marjorie Janvier <Marjorie.Janvier@tufts.edu>

You can check Unicef's numbers. You can compare across countries. You can see
by the numbers that Haiti has a long way to go. It is a shame how the DR,
sharing the same island and right next door, experiences 42 deaths per 1,000
live births while Haiti's is almost twice that at 81 per 1000 live births.
Comparing the two to the US tells us more.

Infant Mortality Rate(the probability of dying before age one expressed per
1000 live births)

Haiti: 91(1995)81(2000)...CIA World Factbook estimates this at 93.35
deaths/1,000 live births (2002 est.)
Dominican Republic:47,42
USA: 8,7
