Haitian American to address Senate panel

Among the five people tapped to testify Tuesday before the U.S. Senate's
powerful Foreign Relations Committee: Dr. Rudolph ''Rudy'' Moise.

The North Miami family physician and owner of the 24-hour Creole-language
radio station Radio Carnivale WRHB-AM (1020) is the only Haitian American
scheduled to testify before the committee about the ``Success and Challenges
for U.S. Policy to Haiti.''

Moise said he was asked by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida to address the
committee. His testimony will be five minutes, followed by what can be up to
an hour of questioning.

To prepare, he traveled to Haiti to meet with government and opposition
political leaders.

He also met with the outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Haiti, Brian Dean Curran.

''I have between 15 to 20 pages of notes,'' Moise said by phone shortly
after returning to Miami on Friday.

He said he's been asked to speak about the political landscape in Haiti.

Moise, who holds law and business degrees from the University of Miami, is
the new president of UM's Alumni Association. He also serves in the U.S. Air
Force Reserve.

With those credentials, he said, he hopes to present a different perception
of Haitian Americans and add to the debate about his politically chaotic
country. Also scheduled to testify Tuesday is Steven Forester, a senior
policy advocate for Haitian Women of Miami.
