ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Bibliographer, editor, educator, essayist, interpreter, grammarian,
lexicographer, linguist, novelist, poet, researcher, translator, and author
of several books, articles and documents on Haitian Creole, Emmanuel W.
VEDRINE was born in Lazil, Haiti. He emigrated to Boston (USA) in 1976. He
studied Letters, Philosophy and Linguistics at different American and
European institutions. In 1984, he received an "Official Citation", from the
Dean Of Students' Affairs at University of Massachusetts-Boston for his
academic services to that University. He graduated from University of
Massachusetts-Boston (B.A., 1987) and from Colegio De España (Salamanca,
Spain; "D.E.H" in Hispanic Studies, 1989), where he received special
training as "Instructor of Spanish as a Second Language". He entered Boston
Public Schools (1987) as "Teacher of Social Studies", where he taught
American History, World History, Haitian Culture & Language, Career Prep.
and, later, French & Spanish. He completed his "G.T.P" (Graduate Teachers'
Program) at Eastern Nazarene College (Quincy, Massachusetts). He has served
as Lecturer at the University of Rhode Island (1990, Dept. of Spanish) and
Lecturer and Associate Researcher at Indiana University (1999-2000, Dept.
French & Italian); Visiting Researcher at Universidad De Salamanca
(Salamanca, Espay - 1982, 85, 87), Universidad Nacional Autonoma De México
(UNAM, 1983), Freiburg Universität (Germany, 1985), University of
Massachusetts-Amherst (1991), and Indiana University (1997); and Teacher of
French & Spanish at St. Gregory High School (Boston, Massachusetts 1992),
when Védrine entered The Goethe Institute of Boston to pursue advanced
studies in German. Founder & Editor-in-chief of "E. W. Védrine Creole
Project" (since 1993), a publication project with the goal of developing
teaching materials for Haitian Bilingual Programs (both in Haiti and in the
diaspora) and for learners of Kreyòl. SCHOLARSHIPS: University of
Massachusetts-Boston (1985, graduate studies in 'Bilingual Education);
University of Rhode Island (1990, graduate studies in 'Hispanic Studies');
Harvard University (1993, graduate studies in 'Theoretical Linguistics');
Indiana University (1999, advanced research in 'Creole Studies' and graduate
studies in 'French linguistics'). As former host of the Haitian radio talk
show "Chache Konnen ak Védrine" (Boston, 1996-97), a program based on
research and literary criticism (through Haïti Diaspo Inter 1330 AM), he
received a "leadership" certificate from University of Massachusetts-Boston
(1997, College CPCS). RESEARCH INTERESTS: Bilingual Education, Developing
teaching materials, Linguistics (french, hispanic, creole), and Literature
(francophone, hispanic, creole). His literary works have appeared in:
