TRUCKERS DEMAND END

TO DOMINICAN TAX

PORT-AU-PRINCE-- Truckers blocked a crossing at Haiti's border with the
neighboring Dominican Republic on Tuesday to protest a Dominican tax on
merchandise moving between the two countries.

The truckers began Monday turning vehicles back at the Malpasse border
crossing, about 28 miles east of Port-au-Prince, said Duclos Benisoit,
leader of the Haitian Public Transport Federation.

The truckers vowed to continue their protest through Wednesday, when union
leaders were to meet in Santo Domingo with Dominican President Hipolito
Mejia to ask that he lift a 5 percent tax on cross-border shipments.
