Representative Brutus invites Miami-Dade students to participate in Essay
Contest Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Haitian Independence - Top
Student Essays to Win Cash Prizes Totaling $500


Miami, Fl – Today, Representative Phillip Brutus announced an essay
competition commemorating the Bicentennial of Haitian Independence and
invited Miami-Dade County Public School students to participate. This
contest encourages youth to explore Haiti’s rich history and learn how the
small island nation won its independence from France. The theme of the essay
contest is, "Understanding the Struggle for Independence: How Believing
Leads to Achieving.”



"The historic bicentennial anniversary of Haitian Independence provides us
with the unique opportunity to educate Florida's students about the
contributions of Haitian individuals to World History, while inspiring them
to continue the legacy of freedom," said Representative Brutus.


The contest is open to all Miami-Dade Public School students. Three winners
will be selected. The 1st Place Winner receives $500; the Second Place
Winner receives $300; and the Third Place winner receives $200.





Essay Guidelines are as follows:

·         Entries must be e-mailed to Brutus.Phillip@myfloridahouse.com, or
to the Representative's District Office, Suite 103, 1125 Northeast 125th
Street, Miami, FL, 33161



Entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., December 15, 2003.

·         Each student may enter one essay no longer than 500 words.

·         Essays submitted must include: contestant's name, home address,
telephone number, school the student attends, grade level and title of the
essay.
