I would like to give anecdotal backup to everything Mr.
Corbett has said in this reply.

If my wife and I had not visited Haiti in Dec/January of
2002/2003 there is no way in the world we could have
undersood what our daughter was telling us of the situation
she was encountering. I am sure we would have sent funds
to help with some of her projects, but not nearly the
amounts we sent or have continued to send since then.

We would not have been able to give the slide shows we have
given and to recruit others of our family and friends to
join in trying to do a bit to help.

Bob Corbett is right. A visit to Haiti is more likely to
genreate hundreds times more help than just a simple
sending of cash one time.
