North Miami plans Festival of Freedom

The city of North Miami will celebrate Haiti's bicentennial and the
Emancipation Proclamation with its Festival of Freedom, taking place from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Griffing Park, located at West Dixie Highway and
Northeast 123rd Street.

The event commemorates the 200th anniversary of founding of the Republic of
Haiti, as well as the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, which
was signed Jan. 1, 1863, granting freedom to slaves in all territory then at
war with the United States.

The free event will feature live traditional Haitian compas music, folkloric
dance by Gina and Ginette, a Haitian art exhibit, food and entertainment,
plus a soup contest for a Haitian New Year's tradition, soup joumou, or
pumpkin soup. Soup samples will be available for tasting.
