17956: DAwn: RE: 17950: Burnham: RE: 17943: (Hermantin)Sun-Sentinel-15-Westminster students raise $3,000 to build school in (fwd)

Bringing volunteers into Haiti to build schools, etc. helps them to
think more globally, to open them up to how other parts of the world
live in contrast to their own lifestyles. Sometimes these volunteers go
back to North America changed forever, sometimes not. Personally I
think that a positive means of getting North Americans and other
internationals thinking about, and yes, praying for, Haiti, is
worthwhile. That being said, I also believe and have seen that having
nationals work side by side with the volunteers works well and always
prefer this arrangement. On the Haitian side, when the locals have
something invested in the building project (if not monetarily, then with
their time and work) they will be more likely to take care of it long
term. This is true of people everywhere, not just in Haiti.
