18468: Maxwell Re: 18453: Simidor: Give Haiti a chance (fwd)

From: Stuart Maxwell <emailme@stumax.com>

In the interest in continuing my education on this subject, may I ask
Mr. Simidor where he got the information that only "15% of the
electorate voted in the 2000 presidential elections"? I asked this
group a couple of weeks ago for sources of information on the 2000
elections. Subsequent to that request, I read election reports and
other documents from OAS, ICIO, CARICOM, the UN, the Haitian Embassy,
and the US State Department. Each of these sources more or less agrees
on voter turnout of around 60%.

I wrote a report of my findings on my weblog. If there is a
legitimate source of information that I have missed on this topic, I am
very much interested to read it and correct any misrepresentations of
fact. I freely admit that my sources were limited to ones I could
find online and I was in no position to assess their credibility.

Also, what is the source of the remark that Aristide intends to stay
"in control" through 2015?

Please understand that I'm a newcomer to Haitian studies and only seek
understanding and guidance in sorting out the sometimes confusing and
conflicting points of view.
