18667: Keesey: Re: 18659: HAITI: A crisis made in the United States (fwd)

From: Christopher Keesey <tanbou1@yahoo.com>

There is no doubt that US intervention has caused
uncountable and lasting ills in Haiti and throughout
Latin America. This is no new revelation. Much like
a mirror of human nature, the US has posed numerous
campaigns to "aid" developing countries while having
obvious and blatant ulterior motives for personal
gain.

However, is this really the time for playing the blame
game? While we search the historical records for
every misstep and selfish untertaking by the US, we
could be spending time seeking solutions to what has
become a history made of "big men" tossed aside when
their uses to those with hands in their pockets have
disappeared.(check Amy Wilentz's insightful article)

While "a crisis made in the United States" cites
certain unrefutable facts, other proclamations leave
me scratching my head. Such as the US government, "Big
business" AND the media in a deliberate campaign to
instigate recent events? I'm a sucker for a good
conspiracy theory but this is a stretch.

I addressed my apprehension in an earlier post to any
real support from upper levels of the US government.
As far as "big business" goes; I believe you give
them far too much credit. Aside from a very few US
companies still in Haiti for cheap labor, they were
disinvolved the second they heard heard the words
"politically unstable." If it can't pad the christmas
bonus of upper management, "big business" could care
less.

Finally, as to the media's involvement see "big
business" comments above. If its not paid for by an
advertiser they aren't putting that much thought into
it. They have certainly contributed repeatedly to
Haiti's "bad press" over the years but as far as any
documented partnership between they, the government
and "big business", it's quite a stretch.

While the blame game is good for venting pent up
anger, it will never provide real solutions to real
problems.
