American suspends flights to Haiti

BY INA PAIVA CORDLE

American Airlines today suspended flights between the United States and
Haiti, until Wednesday.

American operates three nonstop flights daily between Port-au-Prince and
Miami, and one nonstop daily between Port-au-Prince and both Fort Lauderdale
and New York's Kennedy Airport. American also has flies on Saturdays and
Sundays between Port-au-Prince and Boston.

The airline said the decision was reached because it has become extremely
difficult for employees to gain access to the airport. American was
concerned it would not have enough staffing to serve customers and handle
the aircraft at the gate.

American said it is calling customers booked on the canceled flights to
assist them in making other arrangements. The airline said it will honor the
tickets on later flights without the service fees, once its Port-au-Prince
service resumes, and that it will grant refunds to those who request them.
