Apologies for a badly-phrased passage of this post:

> Aristide was unknown until the very last few
months of the Duvalier regime and then it was simply for a few fiery
sermons confined to the pulpit, nothing more.

__________

I didn't mean that all he ever did was preach from the pulpit, but that his
activity was confined to that _before_ the Duvaliers fell. After they
fled, he expanded his campaigning against the ruling class and became much
more known, still speaking in churches but now also on the radio. A church
was the safest place -- until it proved otherwise in the 1988 massacre. He
wasn't mentioned as a possible president until spring 1990.
