20246: Hess: Re: 20234: Slavin: Chamberlain Writes in LATimes 022704 (fwd)

A more seriously problematic quote from Chamberlain's article:

>>Haitians, meanwhile, worship at the Church of the Perpetual Conspiracy.
Anyone's fault but Haiti's … the imagined nonstop plotting by the United States
to seize the country's negligible economic resources and crush a supposed
revolutionary example to other countries. <<

I hate blanket statements. I try not to make them, but I'm sure I make a few.
However, this one is horribly sophomoric. There are a great many Haitians
struggling against to create a better nation and many of them no all to well that
some other Haitians are part of the problem.

One problem with trashing conspiracy theories is that today's conspiracy
theory might be tomorrow's news account. I recall Haitians in government in DC
telling me they couldn't have certain conversations on the phone because of the
lines not being secure. I would roll my eyes. A few weeks later the NY Times
did an article on the CIA releasing anti-American comments by Haitian government
officials from wire taps.
