That story is that Dessalines saw the French flag when he was going to a
meeting in Arcahaie, and in his mind the white part represented the
white (French) who were separating the mulattoes from the black slaves,
and so he took the flag, ripped out the white part and gave the Red &
Blue parts to Catherine Flon to sew up. This was the rallying flag for
the slaves against the French and then it became the official Haitian
flag.  The flag has always stayed red and blue, except for the Duvalier
period when he wanted to express the negritude of the Haitian people.
But it reverted back to Red and blue later on.
