In my book Haiti's Bad Press, I quote a U.S. Baptist missionary in Haiti as
saying, ""These people usually just want to do a little work on their own
land, their own project, just for themselves, just enough to get along and
then spend it all.  They don't really understand the social power and
dignity of work and cooperation.  Part of the Christian message is to teach
the dignity of working for others, the power of saving your money,
investing in what your family needs, and not complaining all the time and
fighting the government and trying to change things.  When things get
