21360: McCalla: RE: 21318: Esser: The American Learning Zone (fwd)

From: Jocelyn McCalla <makala99@yahoo.com>

In his Haiti travelog, The American Learning Zone (Counterpunch, April 14,
2004), Tom Reeves makes many claims. I would have liked to see evidence of a
sound analysis based on solid facts. I have unfortunately noted lots of
anecdotes with little substance. If that is the sort of story that
progressives and solidarity activists dish out as investigative analysis
these days, may God have mercy on our soul.

With respect to the allegations made against the NCHR in Haiti, allow me to
refer members of this list to their web site www.nchrhaiti.org. There, one
can sift through the materials posted and review the data. For statements
made on Haiti's human rights situation by NCHR in NY, I also invite members
to visit www.nchr.org.

Those who really wish to see a free, democratic, human rights based,
law-abiding state in Haiti should perhaps take the time to really reflect on
what it will take to reach each one of these objectives. I, for one, am
tired of condescending sandelistas acting no better than the cowboys in
Washington as they recklessly malign democracy and human rights activists,
because on the one hand they can't face the truth, and on the other, they
can't face themselves.
