South Florida Haitians honor nation's Flag Day

Haitian-Americans in Broward County will mark their country's Flag Day
starting today with celebration and reflection.

Organizations in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach have planned events in
the midst of a year marked by a bicentennial and political strife.

The programs will include:

"Tradition and Evolution," a children's dance recital sponsored by the
A.C.T.I.O.N. Foundation at 11 a.m. today in the African-American Research
Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale.

"Haiti: at the Crossroads of History," 7 p.m. tonight at Nova Southeastern
University's Rosa and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray
Ferrero Jr. Blvd., Davie. Sponsored by Minority Development and Empowerment
Inc., it will feature cultural entertainment and speeches from State Rep.
Yolly Roberson, D-Miami, Broward County Mayor Ilene Lieberman and other
dignitaries.

"Thank God for Freedom," 7 p.m. tonight at the Worldwide Christian Center
Church, 450 Powerline Road, Pompano. Sponsored by the Louverture Center for
Freedom and Development, the event will be followed by a community dinner at
8:30 p.m.

"A Celebration of Freedom," sponsored by the Louverture Center, 7 p.m.
Wednesday at the church. Haitian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue will be
keynote speaker.

"Free to Prosper: Haiti Reconstruction Project," 7 p.m. Thursday at the
church. Participants will include Prime Minister Latortue and local Haitian
business people.

"Economic Development Project," sponsored by the Louverture Center, 7 p.m.
Friday at the church, presented by the Alliance for the Progress of Haiti.
