FESTIVAL FILM JAKMÈL

An ambitious selection of films to commemorate the bicentenary of Haiti¹s
independence

JULY  9 ­ JULY 18 2004



Jacmel, Haiti -  Fondation Sant D¹A Jakmel (FOSAJ), an art centre for
aspiring and established artists of Haiti presents the first edition of the
Festival Film Jakmèl. The Sant D¹A Jakmel opened in Jacmel in October 2003.
It currently has 14 resident artists. The school is primarily focused on
painting but will extend its disciplines to sculpture, print, film and
photography. The Festival Film Jakmèl is the initiative of Patrick Boucard,
Haitian artist and founder of the Sant D¹A Jakmel and David Belle, American
film director living in Haiti. The festival is an unprecedented event in
Jacmel that will feature about 50 films including documentaries, classics,
short and feature length fiction by Haitian and foreign film directors.





The highlights of the festival include:



Films on Haitian art and artists

Portraits of Jacmelians and Jacmel

A ³global lens², a selection of films, although not about Haitian subjects
but will allow the Haitian public to analyze, redefine and situate Haiti in
a global context.

The festival will showcase the films of Haiti-based directors such as Arnold
Antonin, Rassoul Labuchin, Laurence Magloire, Reginald Lubin, Richard
Senecal, Mario Delatour and Carl Lafontant

As well as Haitian directors based abroad, Michèle Lemoine, Raoul Peck,
Maxence Denis, Frantz Voltaire,

Jaques Roc, Wilkinson Bruna and  Anne Lescot.

Premieres such as La Fin des Chimères  by French director, Charles Najman
and L¹évangile du Cochon Créole by Michel Ange Kay, recently screened at the
Cannes Film Festival.

Professional Round Table discussions and debates.

Special cinema initiative courses for students and amateurs.





The films will be screened in several historical venues throughout the town
and outdoor screenings will be held in public places.

The festival will open on the 9th July with an outdoor screening and close
on the 17th July with an audience prize ceremony.

Many directors will be attending to present and discuss their films with the
audience.

Other events include: Art and Ceramic exhibition, book signings and musical
events.

All screenings will be free and open to the public.
