The Latin American Studies Program at Skidmore College invites you to its exciting fall events that are centered around our colloquium, "Haiti: The First Two Hundred Years."

Haiti has been the invisible among the invisible: a small part of an island in the Caribbean with a black population facing discrimination from its neighbor, the Dominican Republic. It has a national identity that rests on African roots but a geographical location that situates it within the Caribbean and Latin America.

The colloquium, complemented by a film festival, a literary series, and panel discussions, will explore the complexities of Haiti's identity politics and its relationship to the hemispheric forces that have shaped the nation over the past 200 years.

We have planned this series of events with the entire campus community in mind and we look forward to your participation.

Ella Turenne, New York City-based poet and artist, and culture reporter for the Haitian Times
will lead a  participatory workshop based on Turenne’s revolution/revolisyon/revolution

"Haiti in Words"
Danielle Legros Georges, assistant professor at the Division of Creative Art and Learning, Lesley University, will read from his works, including Maroon.
Professor Legros is a poet and translator born in Haiti and raised in the U.S.

"Haiti in words"
Marilene Phipps, a writer, poet, and painter who has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and Harvard University, will read from her works.
