L'Esthétique de la Spirale


The Aesthetics of the "Spirale" Movement


Frankétienne, known internationally as the author of over 30 literary works,
as well as for his work as a professional painter, is the founder of the
"Spirale" Movement in Haiti, which is based on the aesthetics of chaos.
Frankétienne came to international fame in 1975 when he published Dezafi, the first
Caribbean novel written entirely in Haitian Créole. His play, Pèlintèt (1978), a
critique of the dictatorship of François Duvalier, secured his position as the
national playwright of Haiti.  The play was produced at Brooklyn College in the
early 80's.  Frankétienne has received numerous prizes and awards, including
the "Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe" in 2002 for H'Eros - Chimères, and more
recently, in 2004, the Pablo Neruda Prize.  In 1988, he was named Minister of
Culture in Haiti.  Among his most famous works are Ultravocal (1972), Bobomasouri
(1984), Kaselezo (1985), L'Oiseau schizophone (1998), and Miraculeuse (2003).
