The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) called on Tuesday for an
investigation into allegations that ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand
Aristide was financing the current violence in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

SABC radio news reported earlier on allegations made by the interim
president of Haiti.

"The interim Haitian president is alleging that the revolt in the capital,
by Aristide supporters, is being bankrolled by ousted president, Aristide,"
ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe said.

"If Mark Thatcher is being investigated on allegations that he'd bankrolled
a failed coup plot in Equatorial Guinea, we at the ACDP say the same measure
of action should be applied to Aristide, who's currently exiled in South
Africa," he said.

The ACDP also questioned why Aristide and his wife had been given academic
positions at the University of South Africa (Unisa), while such allegations
were surfacing.

"It would still be fine if the couple had volunteered for the positions at
Unisa, but Aristide and his wife are being employed and paid by the
university, while there are many South Africans who are qualified to fill
the positions and who are looking for work.

"We call on the necessary authorities to investigate such allegations and to
take the necessary action," Meshoe said.
