VODOU DRUM AND DANCE GROUP PRESENTS RISING SUN: DAY OF THE DEAD ON
NOVEMBER 13 IN BROOKLYN

La Troupe Makandal, New York's center for Afro-Haitian drum and dance,
presents Part One (Day of the Dead) of its fifth annual Rising Sun: A
Vodou Drama of Death and Rebirth in Three Parts. Day of the Dead
celebrates Gede (pronounced Gay-day), the eternal figure in black, the
trickster who confounds life and death, the cosmic comedian. This year
Gede meets the beautiful and arrogant Arachne. Enticed by Gede to a
midnight party in the cemetery, Arachne experiences a powerful
life-and-death transformation.

Drumming and song arrangements by NEA Heritage Fellow Master Drummer
Frisner Augustin. Dance pieces choreographed with visiting artist Pierre
Desrameaux, formerly of Haiti's National Folkloric Troupe. Light
refreshments and artwork for sale. Admission at the door: $15 general,
