Religious leaders seek aid to rebuild

SANTO DOMINGO · Haitian intellectuals and religious leaders called on the government Monday to strengthen its role in Haiti's reconstruction, pointing to geographic proximity and a shared interest in stability.

The two countries share the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is on the eastern side and Haiti occupies the western -- with a porous 225-mile border.

"The Dominican government has not been engaged enough in Haiti," said the Rev. Octamoliere Liberius, vice president of the Haitian-Dominican Dialogue Commission, a group of dozens of Christian leaders from both countries
