25187: lyall:- (comment) - prices (fwd)

From: J.David Lyall <postmaster@lyalls.net>

The uproar over gasoline prices seems to be prompting general price
rises in the peyizan market place. Simple bread, pen, went up from 2
gou to 2 and a half gourdes for one biscuit. Looks like a biscuit to
me but Biswit is flat bread. Flat leavened bread broken off in
approximate sizes depending on how many gourdes worth you want. This
local bread/biswit is almost all made in wood fired boulangeries so
the price of fuel wood might be finally showing its way thru.

Regular bakery bread in plastic bags hasn't gone up, altho the cost
of running a supermarket is certainly going up. Caribbean market is
building a tall wall all around their lot. The building is full of
bullet holes now. I hadn't been to the Caribbean in a year or so but
had heard that they were subject to a number of armed assaults. Lots
of security guards being paid there now. A number of other
supermarkets have shut down, their owners assassinated or fled to
Miami.

Vegetables in the street market seem to get more expensive as well.
Paid 10 gourdes for one avocado today. Depends on what is in season
of course. These were new hard ones.
