I found that Haitian children and adolescents in Miami are unlikely to look
directly at an adult unless there is a rapport or trust established. It is
about respect. The same is still true of Native American children in some
areas.

Direct eye contact may be perceived as a challenge in some cultures. Nonverbal
behaviors vary considerably cross-culturally.
