The addition of a new cell phone company to the haitian market may be good
news for "business" whatever that means, but it's hardly good news for Haiti.
The basic wired telephone service, the one that really maintain business and
personal communication going is in the most dismal state. You can't get a line
even if you're willing to pay exhorbitant off the book fees. Telephone
units remain mute for months at a time and even years. If you are coming into
the
country for a short visit and can't afford a quick connect via a cell phone
company, with all the uncertainty that that entails, tough luck. Forget it if
you are venturing outside of the capital. In the meantime private cell
companies are coming in trying to profit of the ineficiency of the basic
telephone
service which the inexistant state seems incapable of doing anything about
and this for years that this problem has exixted. A new cell phone company? I
don't think it's such good news.
