You are most likely correct in your assessment that the  poor and middle
class Haitians would welcome a US protectorate. But Haitians  being Haitians,
(poor, middle class, ideologues, faux nationalists, and what  have you), they
would have to be provided with some alibi, some excuse, a face  saving formula,

something a la Aristide being  kidnapped..........or running  away.
