27033: Kawolina (comment) Domestic Violence in Haiti

 Dear Corbett and Corbetters,
I rarely post, but continuously read all postings and follow the
discussions. There is seldom any discussions on the issue of Domestic violence
in
Haiti--a serious problem for as long as I can remember, and I am nearly half a
century old. I returned from Haiti last night, two days after the tragic news
of
the murdering/killing of television personality (Telemax) Ginou Mondesir
(12/24)
at the hands
of her spouse/boyfriend.
Not once, during the braodcast around her death did I hear a statement by the
Haitian Ministry
dealing with Women's Affairs? I have searched the net for that news item, a
profile of her,
a profile of the assasin, the position of women's organizations in the country
without any success.

Amidst the political discourse, there needs to be talks, programs, plans to
address
this flagrant and handicapping problem in the country, involving both Haitian
women and men.
True progress (political, social and otherwise) cannot begin if every citizen
cannot feel protected. "Insecurity" in one's home is harsher, more damaging
and devasting than the one that is being experienced in the streets. Many
Haitian women at home and in our diaspora "sleep with the enemy"
every night. The Haitian situation and condition (the permeating violence) will
not change, if the relationship of Haitian men and Haitian women cannot be
without terror at home.
