27786: Boswell (comment) Aristide/Jail/Preval (fwd)

From: Richard A. Boswell <boswellr@pacbell.net>

Does anyone really believe that if the U.S. had something on Aristide that they wouldn't issue an indictment and seek his extradition from South Africa. Moreover, as Preval has said, Haiti does not have banishment. He is free to come back. This election points out that President Aristide was very popular and could have withstood an electoral challenge even with all of his problems. The reason that he is not in Haiti is because the U.S. and others did not want him anywhere near the country.

You do not have to like Aristide to see that he was popularly elected and could get elected again if his name appeared on the ballot.
