28122: Craig (news) HAITI: LEGISLATIVE RUNOFF ELECTION SET FOR APRIL 21 (fwd)

From: Dan Craig

HAITI: LEGISLATIVE RUNOFF ELECTION SET FOR APRIL 21 A legislative runoff needed to restore popularly elected government to Haiti will take place April 21, the interim administration announced. Scores of candidates seeking 129 legislative seats will take part in the runoff, considered the final step in often-delayed elections called to replace former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Officials had scheduled the runoff for March 19 but postponed it, citing street protests after the Feb. 7 presidential election, won by René Préval. The delay also forced postponement of his inauguration; he cannot take power without a sitting Parliament. A new inauguration date was not set. (AP)
