Americas briefs HAITI
PREVAL TO BOOST SUGAR INDUSTRY
LEOGANE - President-elect Rene Preval announced plans Tuesday to diversify
Haiti's ailing sugar industry, including an initiative to refine sugar cane
into clean-burning fuel with help from Brazil.
Preval, a 63-year-old agronomist, said using sugar cane to produce ethanol
bio-diesel could breathe new life into the struggling industry and help the
poor Caribbean country cope with high energy prices.
The former president said plans were under way to boost Haiti's sugar cane
cultivation for making ethanol, an eco-friendly fuel that can be used to power
cars and generate electricity.
